A disturbing mob killing in Ogun State has sparked calls for investigation after a man identified as Daniel Boko was allegedly tied to an electricity pole and beaten to death by community members in Matogun-Oke Suku, near Abiola Junction, on the night of Monday, September 28, 2026.
A video from the scene showed Boko stripped from the waist down and tied to the pole while he was repeatedly beaten with a cutlass.
Relatives and residents also said he was struck with large sticks before he died.
WHAT HAPPENED TO DANIEL BOKO?
The circumstances that led to the attack remain unclear. According to accounts obtained from people close to the victim, Boko was assaulted by members of the community and left with severe injuries. A relative who identified himself as Boko’s uncle said he went to the scene after receiving information about the incident and found the victim’s body badly swollen and bearing injuries.
The uncle said he initially heard claims that Boko had hit his head against a brick, but said what he saw at the scene raised questions about that explanation. He said Boko had been stripped, tied and beaten with large sticks, while one of his hands had suffered a severe injury.
A close friend of the deceased confirmed that the incident occurred on September 28 but said he did not know what had triggered the assault.
VIDEO RAISES QUESTIONS OVER MOB VIOLENCE
The video showing the attack has intensified concern over the circumstances surrounding Boko’s death and the alleged role of members of the community.
The footage reportedly shows Boko restrained against the electricity pole while people around him assault him. Relatives and associates have subsequently called for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.
The incident also raises questions about the circumstances under which private citizens took control of a situation that should ordinarily be handled through lawful investigation and due process.
POLICE RESPONSE
At the time the report was filed, the Ogun State Police Command had not publicly provided details of an investigation into the killing.
Attempts to obtain comments from the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, on the circumstances surrounding the incident and possible police action had not received a response.
The absence of a publicly confirmed police account means that the motive for the attack, the identities of those involved and the events immediately preceding Boko’s death remain matters requiring investigation.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Daniel Boko’s death has once again brought attention to the danger of mob violence and the consequences of allowing allegations against individuals to be settled outside established legal processes.
While the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, any person suspected of wrongdoing is entitled to be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted before a competent court. Those responsible for an unlawful killing should likewise face the law if the evidence establishes their involvement.

The incident underscores the need for communities to alert law-enforcement authorities when serious allegations arise rather than resorting to violence, which can turn an accusation into an irreversible tragedy.
