Political tension has intensified in Kaduna State after 12 figures linked to the African Democratic Congress and Peoples Democratic Party were reportedly detained following violence surrounding political activities in Kafanchan.
Reports indicate that eight ADC members and four PDP members were among those detained and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.
An APC chieftain accused by opposition supporters of involvement in the incident was reportedly arrested and later released.
POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN KAFANCHAN
The arrests followed disruption and violence linked to political campaigning in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area.
Opposition figures have raised concerns over the handling of the arrests, particularly the reported release of the APC figure while opposition members remained detained.
The police have said the arrests are connected to investigations into the violence. The circumstances surrounding the alleged incitement and the reasons for the different treatment of the individuals remain contested.
2027 CONCERNS
The development comes as political parties increase grassroots activity ahead of the 2027 elections.Security agencies will face increasing pressure to maintain public order without being perceived as favouring one political party over another.
ValidViewNetwork reports that allegations of selective enforcement are serious and should be addressed with evidence. The appropriate test is whether security agencies apply the same legal standards to members of all political parties involved in violence or incitement.
