Rumen Radev, Bulgaria’s former president known for his pro-Russia stance, has led his new center-left Progressive Bulgaria party to a commanding victory in the country’s parliamentary elections on April 19, 2026. Official results show the party capturing around 44.7% of the vote after nearly all ballots were counted, securing over 130 seats in the 240-member parliament and positioning Radev to become the next prime minister. This landslide marks one of the most decisive mandates in decades, potentially ending five years of turmoil with eight snap elections triggered by gridlock, corruption scandals, and fragile coalitions.
Bulgaria’s voters, weary from repeated polls and stagnant governance, turned out in higher numbers, with turnout estimated at around 43-60%—a sharp rise from recent lows. Radev, a former air force general who resigned the presidency in January 2026, campaigned on anti-corruption pledges, stability, and rejecting military aid to Ukraine while opposing EU sanctions on Russia. His rivals, including Boyko Borissov’s GERB (13-15%) and the pro-EU We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (12-13%), trailed far behind, reducing the number of parliamentary parties from nine to five.
Reactions and Implications
Both Russia and the EU have congratulated the winners, though analysts warn Radev could act as a “Trojan horse” for Kremlin influence despite his pro-EU rhetoric. Radev hailed the win as a “victory of optimism over skepticism,” vowing to break the cycle of short-lived governments and restore public trust. While a single-party government seems possible, he has left room for coalitions with pro-European groups to navigate Bulgaria’s EU membership and NATO commitments. This shift raises questions about Sofia’s foreign policy in a divided Europe.
