A viral robbery video has triggered a major police operation around Abuja’s Maitama area, with 70 people arrested and 40 still in custody.

The FCT Police Command said 30 of those arrested were released after screening, while 40 remained in custody for further investigation.

The victim has also identified two of the suspects as people he recognised from the incident.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the development followed a video circulating online which alleged a robbery around the Unity Fountain area.

Police launch raids around Unity Fountain
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi ordered immediate and comprehensive raids around identified criminal flashpoints after the video gained attention.

Officers from the Maitama Division carried out coordinated operations around the area. The operation produced 70 arrests.

Police then began screening the suspects to determine who had any connection with the alleged robbery.

Thirty people were released after the screening.
Forty others remained in custody.

The police said the investigation is continuing.
The victim’s identification of two suspects has given investigators a more specific lead.

Police are also working to identify and apprehend other people who may have participated in the incident.

Arrest does not mean conviction
The distinction is important. Being arrested does not mean a person has been found guilty. The 40 people still in custody remain suspects unless prosecutors eventually establish their guilt before a court.

The police investigation must therefore determine what each suspect did, whether there is evidence linking them to the incident and whether the evidence can support prosecution.

That process matters, particularly in a mass arrest involving people picked up during a security operation.

Abuja’s wider security problem
The incident also highlights the security challenge around busy public spaces in the Federal Capital Territory. Areas around Maitama and Unity Fountain attract commuters, workers, visitors and young people.

A single robbery video can quickly create public fear, especially when it appears to show several people operating together.

The police response shows the power of social media to influence security operations.

A video that reaches thousands of people can now trigger an investigation within hours.

But it also creates a second responsibility.
Authorities must separate genuine evidence from speculation. A viral video can provide a lead. It cannot, by itself, determine who is guilty.

Police ask residents to stay alert
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activity. It also encouraged members of the public to cooperate with investigators.

The command provided emergency lines, 08032003913 and 08061581938, for urgent security information.

The current investigation will now determine whether the two people identified by the victim can be linked to the robbery and whether the remaining suspects have any connection to the incident.

For Abuja residents, the message is simple.
Stay alert. Report suspicious activity.
But do not turn suspicion into conviction.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Maitama operation is still an investigation, not a completed criminal case.

The 70 arrests show the scale of the police response. The 30 releases show that screening matters. And the victim’s identification of two suspects gives investigators a more concrete direction.
What happens next will depend on the evidence.
