Nigeria’s football crisis has taken a dramatic turn, with FIFA and CAF officials arriving in Abuja as security agencies tighten control around the headquarters of the Nigeria Football Federation.
The development has turned the NFF complex inside the Moshood Abiola National Stadium into the centre of an international football intervention.
A joint FIFA and CAF delegation is in Nigeria for a two-day assessment mission on September 14 and 15.
The officials are meeting NFF management and stakeholders as they examine the crisis surrounding the federation.
At the same time, operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force have taken positions around the NFF secretariat.
Access to the premises has reportedly been restricted, with visitors subjected to security checks.
Some stakeholders, including officials linked to the National Institute for Sports, were reportedly denied entry.
More than 20 security operatives were said to have been deployed around the complex.
The extraordinary security presence comes at a sensitive moment for Nigerian football.
Former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resigned on August 27.
The federation’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the Executive Committee also resigned.
The mass resignations created a leadership vacuum and triggered a wider dispute over how the federation should be restructured and how its next leadership should emerge.
FIFA and CAF have already suspended the ongoing electoral process while they assess the circumstances surrounding the crisis.
Their current mission is expected to involve consultations with relevant stakeholders before the international bodies determine their next steps.
FIFA and CAF have not announced any final sanction against Nigeria.
The stakes are high.
Nigeria’s football administration is now facing scrutiny from the two bodies that govern the sport globally and across Africa.
The crisis also comes at a time when questions about representation, electoral procedures and the future structure of the NFF have become increasingly difficult to ignore.
