RABAT — Team Nigeria’s tennis contingent has touched down in Morocco ahead of their high-stakes Davis Cup World Group II showdown against the North Africans.
The crucial tie is scheduled for September 19 and 20 at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc in Rabat.
Following weeks of intensive conditioning and tactical drills on the clay courts of the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, the team departed early Monday morning, arriving in the Moroccan capital by midday to finalize their preparations.
Coached by Benson Ishicheli, the Nigerian squad features top-ranked player Canice Abua, former national number one Daniel Adeleye, Michael Emmanuel, and Abubakar Yusuf. Rising star Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is also expected to link up with the contingent in Rabat to complete the five-man roster.
Nigeria secured its place in World Group II following a stellar 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club. Meanwhile, Morocco enters the fixture following a setback against Colombia during their World Group I play-offs in Casablanca.
History heavily favors the hosts, with Nigeria seeking their first-ever win after dropping all four previous encounters against Morocco. However, the current Nigerian camp remains high on confidence as they eye a landmark upset and a historic promotion to World Group I.
