“I’M ALL YOURS”: Shehu Buba Seeks Full Security Probe Into Banditry Allegations

“I Have Nothing to Hide”: Shehu Buba Submits Himself to DSS, Police, DIA Over Banditry Allegations

Senator Shehu Buba Umar has done something unusual in Nigerian politics. He has asked the security agencies to investigate him.

The Bauchi South senator and Peoples Redemption Party governorship candidate said he has voluntarily submitted himself to the Department of State Services, Defence Intelligence Agency and Nigeria Police Force over allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

He says he wants the matter taken away from social media and placed before investigators who can establish what is true and what is not.

“I have nothing to hide, and I have nothing to fear from any legitimate investigation,” Buba said.

That is a bold political gamble. It also raises the stakes considerably.

Why Buba is doing this now

The allegations are not entirely new. Buba says similar accusations were made against him as far back as 2014.

According to him, those earlier claims were investigated and dismissed. He says versions of the allegations have resurfaced periodically, but the latest wave became more serious because videos and claims circulated widely on social media.

The senator has consistently denied sponsoring, financing, arming or facilitating bandits, terrorists or kidnappers.

He has described the allegations as politically motivated and defamatory.

He now wants the security agencies to test the claims properly.

His legal team, led by former Nigerian Bar Association President and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, has formally written to the DSS, DIA and police requesting a comprehensive investigation.

The viral videos and the court case behind the controversy

Buba has also disputed the interpretation placed on videos circulating online. He says some of the footage has been presented as evidence that bandit leaders visited his residence. His account is different.

He says some of the footage involved visitors, including Hajj returnees, and that unrelated materials were presented together to create a misleading impression.

The senator says the controversy has also moved beyond social media. He said he petitioned the police in September 2025 after people circulating photographs and videos allegedly demanded money from him.

Five suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges including criminal conspiracy, cyberstalking, criminal defamation, advance-fee fraud and extortion.

The case is still before the court, with the next hearing scheduled for September 29, 2026.

Buba has therefore been careful not to discuss matters that could prejudice the proceedings.

What this means politically

There is another layer to the story. Buba is no longer simply a senator defending himself against an accusation. He is a 2027 governorship candidate.

He left the APC and is pursuing the Bauchi governorship under the PRP.

That makes every allegation against him politically consequential. It also explains why his decision to submit himself for investigation could become a major part of his defence.

Instead of simply saying, “I am innocent,” he is saying, in effect: Investigate me.

That puts pressure on both sides.

If the security agencies find credible evidence, the political consequences could be severe.

If they find no evidence linking him to the alleged crimes, Buba can argue that the accusations were politically driven.

But there is an important caution.

Submitting oneself for investigation is not the same as being cleared.

It is also not evidence that the allegations are true. Only a credible investigation, supported by evidence, can settle the matter.

The bigger question

Nigerian politics has increasingly moved into the territory of viral videos, anonymous accusations and social-media campaigns.

That creates a dangerous environment.

A video can travel faster than an investigation.

An allegation can become public opinion before anyone checks its source.

Buba’s decision attempts to reverse that process. He is asking the state to investigate first and let evidence determine the conclusion.

That is the test now.

The DSS, DIA and police must be allowed to do their work independently. If there is evidence, Nigerians deserve to know.

If there is none, that should also be established clearly.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Shehu Buba’s decision has transformed the controversy from a social-media battle into a formal security question.

For the senator, the political stakes are high.

For the security agencies, the responsibility is even higher.
