“A Difficult Vacuum”: Tinubu Mourns Peter Onwubuariri, Veteran Villa Media OfficialPresident Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of Peter Chukwuemeka Onwubuariri, an Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations at the Presidential Villa.
Onwubuariri died at 48 after a prolonged illness in Kano. His death has left colleagues and family members mourning a journalist whose career moved from the News Agency of Nigeria to the centre of presidential communication.
The Presidency described his death as a major loss to the President and the State House media department.
A career that crossed administrations
Onwubuariri began his professional career in journalism before joining the presidential communication structure. He was posted from the News Agency of Nigeria to the Presidential Villa in 2014.
He subsequently served under three successive administrations.
That gave him a rare institutional memory in a political environment where media teams often change with governments.
He worked behind the scenes on presidential events and official communication. He also served as master of ceremonies at several presidential functions.
His colleagues remembered him not only as a writer but as someone who could handle demanding assignments with professionalism.
“A vacuum difficult to fill”
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, led presidential media aides and members of the Media and Public Relations Department on a condolence visit to the family in Abuja.
The delegation included Tunde Rahman and Fredrick Nwabufo.
Onanuga described Onwubuariri’s death as a loss that created a difficult vacuum.
He remembered him as a very good writer and a professional who contributed meaningfully to presidential events and communications.
Tunde Rahman also paid tribute to his colleague. He described Onwubuariri as a workaholic whose assignments consistently turned out well. Rahman used the occasion to remind media professionals of the importance of taking their health seriously.
That reminder gave the condolence visit another dimension.
Behind the public work of government communication are people whose own lives can be consumed by demanding schedules.
His family remembers a good man
Onwubuariri’s family also spoke during the condolence visit. His elder sister, Amarachi Nwanguma, thanked the presidential media team for standing with the family. She said the family would announce burial arrangements after consultations.
His eldest child, Adaora Onwubuariri, a Computer Science undergraduate, also expressed appreciation for the support. She said the response from his colleagues reinforced the family’s belief that her father had lived as a good man.
That may ultimately be the most meaningful tribute.
