In a decisive move to protect pugilists from predatory management and promotional deals, the professional arm of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, NBF-Pro, has launched a 30-day free legal service scheme.
Unveiled in partnership with Emoni Sports Law—the body’s official legal advisory chamber—the framework is tailored to assist fighters struggling under the weight of restrictive, concurrent, or exploitative contracts.
Tackling Contractual Exploitation
Many Nigerian boxers have historically faced career setbacks due to opaque agreements signed with foreign and local handlers. Under the new initiative, interested athletes can submit their existing contracts for a comprehensive professional audit during the 30-day window.
The legal team will screen documents to identify illegal clauses, resolve concurrent signings, and advise fighters on lawful contract harmonization or termination. Furthermore, the scheme provides vital educational support, teaching athletes how to recognize unfavorable terms before signing future agreements.
Restoring Order to Nigerian Boxing
NBF-Pro Chairman Azania Omo-Agege emphasized that the framework forms part of broader, holistic reforms sweeping through the nation’s boxing administration.
”The legal framework designed to support our boxers will bring an end to all kinds of contract issues that may have inhibited the career trajectory of the athletes,” Omo-Agege stated.
Beyond contract reviews, the initiative includes rigorous compliance checks to ensure that future pacts align strictly with regulations set by the NBF, the National Sports Commission, and World Boxing. Boxers nationwide have been urged to utilize official channels to submit their documents before the expiration of the enrollment window.
