Singaporean Ringleader Pleads Guilty in Historic $260M US Crypto Heist

​A 22-year-old Singaporean national appeared in a Washington federal courtroom to plead guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge, admitting to orchestrating an international cybercrime syndicate responsible for looting over $260 million in cryptocurrency.

​Malone Lam entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, acknowledging his role as a ringleader in a sprawling scheme that utilized sophisticated social engineering, phishing, and occasional home invasions to plunder digital assets. The landmark prosecution marks the first time the U.S. Department of Justice has applied the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act—traditionally reserved for organized crime syndicates and the mafia—to a Bitcoin-related enterprise.

​Federal prosecutors detailed how Lam and his network of associates targeted high-net-worth cryptocurrency holders by impersonating technical support staff from major technology and crypto entities, such as Google and Gemini. By tricking victims into revealing security codes, handing over multi-factor authentication controls, and executing screen-sharing sessions, the crew successfully drained more than 4,100 Bitcoin from a single Washington, D.C., investor in August 2024 alone, amounting to one of the largest single-victim crypto thefts in history.

​The windfall rapidly translated into an extraordinary, cinematic lifestyle. Investigators revealed that the syndicate converted the stolen digital fortunes into a fleet of over 30 exotic vehicles—including custom Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches valued up to $3.8 million each—alongside chartered private jets, high-end timepieces, designer apparel, and sprawling rental mansions across Miami, Los Angeles, and the Hamptons. Lam and his associates routinely dropped up to $500,000 during single nights out at exclusive nightclubs, occasionally tossing luxury designer handbags directly into crowds.

​The operation unraveled rapidly in September 2024 following an FBI sting that led to Lam’s arrest in Miami. Despite being detained, investigators later alleged that Lam attempted to continue directing aspects of the criminal network from behind bars.

​Out of 18 defendants snared in the sprawling federal indictment, Lam is the 11th to enter a guilty plea. He faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in federal prison. A status hearing has been set for December 8, 2026, to determine a formal sentencing date, while court orders demand the full restitution of the laundered funds.
