The Ebonyi State chapter of the Labour Party has urged Minister of Works David Umahi to spend more time addressing infrastructure challenges than engaging in political exchanges with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
The party made the call as political activity around the 2027 elections intensifies and Umahi’s public disagreements with Obi continue to attract attention.
In a statement signed by several Ebonyi Labour Party candidates, the party described Obi as a brother rather than an enemy and urged South-East politicians to avoid rhetoric capable of damaging longstanding relationships between communities.
LP’s CHALLENGE TO UMAHI
The party specifically cited the Enugu-Abakaliki Federal Highway and Enugu-Onitsha Expressway as projects requiring sustained attention.
It also criticised aspects of the Vanco Flyover project in Abakaliki, alleging that construction had disrupted businesses and livelihoods.
Those claims are political allegations and would require independent verification.
ValidViewNetwork reports, the Labour Party’s argument is essentially that political competition should not distract public officials from their current responsibilities.
The party also rejected attempts to blame Obi for decisions taken by administrations after his tenure as Anambra governor, including controversy surrounding Abakaliki Street.
But the politics will continueUmahi and Obi have previously exchanged arguments over their records in office. In July, Umahi said Obi declined his invitation for a public debate over their respective records as governors.
That history makes the latest intervention part of a broader political contest rather than an isolated disagreement.
ValidViewNetwork reports, voters are entitled to hear political arguments from both sides, but public office also comes with measurable responsibilities. The strongest response to political criticism is ultimately performance that citizens can see, measure and compare.
