Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 38-year-old businessman, Philip Tunde, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with 4.80 kilograms of cocaine cleverly concealed inside designer footwear and luggage frames.
The suspect was intercepted on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the joint screening checkpoint in Terminal 2 of the international airport. He was scheduled to board a Royal Air Maroc flight bound for Milan, Italy.
According to anti-narcotics officials, a meticulous search of the suspect’s luggage uncovered a sophisticated trafficking method. Operatives retrieved 16 parcels of the white powdery substance hidden within the thick soles of eight pairs of trainers and canvas shoes. An additional 195 wraps of the illicit substance were painstakingly stuffed inside the hollow metal railings of four traveling bags. Field tests subsequently confirmed the substance to be cocaine, totaling 4.80 kilograms.
During initial interrogations, the suspect confessed that he personally funded part of the operation, claiming he paid 16 million Naira in cash for the cocaine hidden inside the shoes. He further disclosed that the massive consignment tucked into the bag railings was intended for delivery to a business partner waiting in Italy.
In a surprising turn during questioning, the suspect revealed that he financed the illicit purchase using compensation funds awarded to him following a workplace accident at a plastic manufacturing company in Italy, an incident that left him with the loss of two fingertip tips.
The NDLEA has launched a wider investigation to track down other members of the transnational drug syndicate connected to the intercepted consignment, while the suspect remains in custody pending formal charges.
