Swollen ankles and legs may be more than a temporary discomfort.

NHS guidance lists swelling of the ankles and legs among common symptoms of heart failure. The swelling can occur because the body retains fluid when the heart is unable to pump blood effectively.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the warning should not be read as a diagnosis: leg or ankle swelling has several possible causes, and having the symptom alone does not mean a person has heart failure.

WHAT HEART FAILURE MEANS

Heart failure does not mean that the heart has stopped. It means the heart is unable to pump blood around the body as effectively as it should.

NHS guidance says the condition can develop suddenly or gradually. It is more common among older people but can occur at different ages.

THE THREE COMMON WARNING SIGNS

NHS guidance highlights three broad symptoms:

-Breathlessness: A person may become short of breath during activity or even at rest.

-Fatigue: Ordinary activities may become unusually tiring.

-Fluid build-up: The ankles and legs may become swollen.Other symptoms can include persistent coughing, wheezing, dizziness, fainting, a fast heartbeat, bloating and changes in weight.

WHY THE LEGS SWELL

When the heart is not pumping efficiently, fluid can build up in the body. The legs and ankles are common areas where this fluid becomes visible.

NHS guidance describes swollen ankles and legs as being linked to fluid build-up, also known as oedema. The swelling can be worse later in the day after standing or sitting for long periods.

NOT EVERY SWOLLEN LEG MEANS HEART FAILURE

This is one of the most important points for readers. Leg swelling can result from several conditions. It can also be linked to prolonged standing, certain medicines, kidney problems, liver disease, circulation problems and other causes.

That is why self-diagnosis is unsafe.

ValidViewNetwork reports that persistent or worsening swelling should be discussed with a healthcare professional, particularly when it occurs alongside breathlessness, unusual tiredness, chest symptoms or rapid weight gain.

WHEN TO SEEK URGENT HELP

NHS guidance advises people with sudden severe symptoms, particularly serious breathing difficulty or chest pain, to seek emergency medical help.

People experiencing persistent or gradually worsening symptoms should seek medical assessment. Tests can include blood tests, an ECG and echocardiography, depending on the clinical situation.

Heart failure is generally a long-term condition. It may not usually be cured, but treatment can control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Treatment can involve medicines, lifestyle changes, monitoring and specialist care.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the useful lesson from the NHS warning is awareness rather than alarm: persistent swelling of the legs or ankles deserves attention, but only proper medical assessment can determine whether heart failure or another condition is responsible.
