Olukoyede’s 34 Months: EFCC Recovers ₦1.23Trillion,Secures 10,872 Convictions

​The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has shattered its historical monetary asset recovery milestones, pulling in a staggering ₦1.233 trillion across national and foreign currencies over the past 34 months.

​Releasing the scorecard of his stewardship on Monday in Abuja, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, told a media briefing that the sweeping reforms, aggressive enforcement, and institutional restructuring implemented since October 2023 have fundamentally altered the landscape of accountability in Nigeria.

​According to verified operational figures covering October 2023 to July 2026, cash recoveries hit an all-time high of ₦1,233,612,040,411.11. Foreign currency recoveries recorded equally unprecedented figures: $684,478,457.32, £373,905.78, and €9,343,803.66.

​A granular breakdown of the naira haul reveals that approximately ₦397.26 billion (33 percent) represents direct recoveries for the federal government. The remaining ₦836.34 billion (67 percent) constitutes recoveries secured on behalf of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), state revenue services, corporate entities, private individuals, and foreign victims.

​”Two out of every three naira recovered were on behalf of beneficiaries other than the federal government,” Olukoyede noted, emphasizing that the Commission’s mandate extends far beyond federal coffers to restoring capital directly to wronged citizens and public institutions.

​Prosecution and Shifting Crime Typologies

​In the courtroom, the anti-graft agency maintained a formidable posture, receiving 49,673 petitions and investigating 39,615 cases within the 34-month window. Out of 14,476 cases filed in court, the Commission secured 10,872 convictions—yielding an exceptional conviction-to-filing ratio of 75.1 percent. In the first half of 2026 alone, the EFCC amassed 1,370 convictions from 1,889 filings.

​Data analytics from case files point to shifting dynamics in financial crime. Between 2024 and 2025, total recorded offences rose by 24.1 percent. Advance fee fraud and cybercrime jointly account for nearly two-thirds of all recorded offences across nine major categories, with notable spikes observed in procurement fraud, bank fraud, and economic-governance violations.

​To tackle these evolving threats, the Commission’s specialized enforcement units registered 920 cases involving money laundering, unlicensed bureaux de change (BDCs), illegal mining, virtual assets, and terrorist financing, resulting in 212 convictions and an expansive active pipeline of ongoing trials.

​Translating Recoveries to Social Investment

​Olukoyede stressed that asset recovery only serves true public interest when value is directly funneled back into societal development. During the review period, the EFCC released ₦661.32 billion and $492.37 million to rightful beneficiaries.

​This included ₦325.35 billion disbursed directly to individuals and corporate bodies, alongside ₦335.97 billion channeled to MDAs, federal tax authorities, and state internal revenue services. Federal and state tax enforcement alone yielded approximately ₦288.1 billion—achieved by compelling compliance with existing obligations rather than imposing new levies.

​Demonstrating the tangible impact of these recoveries, the federal government directed that ₦50 billion each from EFCC proceeds be allocated to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation in 2024, with matching ₦50 billion infusions for both bodies in 2026.

​Additionally, the forfeited former NOK University was transformed into the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State, matriculating 1,909 students in December 2025. Another high-value private tertiary institution has similarly been forfeited to the federal government.

​Forfeitures, Institutional Overhauls, and Global Credit

​Beyond liquid cash, the EFCC secured interim and final court forfeiture orders on 10,053 tangible assets, including 8,198 electronic devices, 1,177 real estate properties, 370 automobiles, 251 plots of land, numerous schools, hotels, factories, oil rigs, barges, and aircraft, alongside 102 tonnes of solid minerals. Disposals from final forfeiture orders yielded roughly ₦12.07 billion paid directly into the federal treasury.

​On the home front, Olukoyede pointed to internal overhauls designed to boost transparency and accessibility. These include strict new guidelines on arrest and bail, revised sting operation protocols, and the creation of specialized units like the Department of Fraud Risk Assessment and Control, the Security Department, the Immigration and Visa Section, and the Cybercrime Rapid Response Centre (E-C2R2).

​Geographical access was widened with the commissioning of directorates in Enugu and Ilorin, alongside newly established offices in Ekiti, Anambra, and Katsina states. Internal governance saw the restructuring of the Internal Affairs Department into the Ethics and Integrity Department, backed by stricter policies on gifts, hospitality, and conflict of interest.

​The EFCC boss noted that the Commission’s rigorous compliance framework—particularly its clampdown on illicit financial flows, money laundering, and unlicensed BDCs—played a critical role in Nigeria’s successful exit from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List in October 2025.

​With nearly 60 percent of its core operational processes now digitalized, Olukoyede maintained that the EFCC will continue to leverage technology, intelligence, and uncompromising enforcement to sanitize Nigeria’s economic and financial space.
