South Africa: Three Held Over Latest Killing as Death Toll of Women Hits Nine

Three people have been arrested in South Africa over the killing of a woman whose body was found east of Johannesburg, as police investigate a disturbing series of deaths involving women in the area.

The suspects, a man and two women, were arrested over the weekend and were due to appear in court on Monday.

Police said the latest case came amid a wider investigation into the deaths of nine women in Ekurhuleni municipality over the past two months.

Police Yet to Establish a Link

Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said investigators were examining whether the killings were connected.

Police have not established that they were part of one coordinated operation.

In the latest case, authorities said the woman may have been killed in connection with a suspected “love triangle”, although investigations were continuing.

Some of the women whose bodies were discovered were reportedly found with signs of sexual assault, adding to renewed public concern over violence against women in South Africa.

The police investigation is therefore dealing with two questions at once: who killed the women, and whether the separate cases form part of a larger pattern.

Authorities have also stepped up arrests linked to violence against women, with police saying more than 350 people were arrested for rape during the past week as part of a broader crackdown.

For now, investigators have urged caution while they establish the facts behind each death. The nine cases remain under investigation, and the arrests do not by themselves establish guilt.
