BARCELONA — Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club plans to honour Lionel Messi with a special tribute at the renovated Camp Nou once the stadium project is completed.
Laporta said Barcelona hopes to complete the stadium by the beginning of 2028. “We are planning for the Leo Messi tribute once the Spotify Camp Nou is completed,” Laporta said.
“It will be a beautiful tribute.”
The plan is intended to give Messi the farewell celebration he never received when he left Barcelona in 2021.
Messi joined Barcelona’s youth system as a teenager and spent more than two decades connected to the club. He became the central figure of one of the most successful periods in Barcelona’s history before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in 2021. He later moved to Inter Miami.
Laporta’s announcement comes as Barcelona continues the redevelopment of Camp Nou.
The stadium project began in 2023, and UEFA has already selected the renovated Camp Nou to host the 2029 Champions League final.
The proposed Messi tribute would therefore come at a symbolic moment for the club.
Barcelona’s president has previously spoken about the desire to properly recognise Messi’s contribution after his departure did not receive the farewell many supporters expected.
The exact date and format of the tribute have not been announced. For now, the club’s target is clear: complete Camp Nou, bring Messi back to the stadium and finally give one of Barcelona’s most celebrated players a formal tribute in front of supporters. ValidViewNetwork reports.
