Networks Suspend White House TV Pool as Banned Outlets Sue Over Trump Access Bar

Major American television networks suspended their shared “pool” coverage of President Donald Trump on Monday in a rare show of solidarity after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the presidential complex, prompting the three outlets to file a federal lawsuit claiming a direct assault on the First Amendment.

ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC announced they would no longer provide the rotating television pool feed for presidential events.

Under the long-standing arrangement, one network films key moments on behalf of all outlets and shares the footage worldwide. CNN had been scheduled to handle the duty on Monday, including coverage of Trump’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he was due to meet foreign leaders.

With no replacement pool in place, television networks will lack the usual pooled video of those events. Other forms of coverage, including print, radio and independent reporting from outside the restricted grounds, continue.

The suspension followed Trump’s abrupt announcement on Friday that he was immediately banning the three organizations from White House grounds, accusing them of constant “fake news.” Reporters from CNN, MS NOW (the rebranded former MSNBC) and Politico had their credentials revoked without prior notice or process and were denied entry on Saturday. Journalists from the outlets have since reported from public sidewalks near the complex.

In a joint statement accompanying their lawsuit filed Monday in Washington federal court, CNN, MS NOW and Politico said the ban “could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles.” They argued the White House revoked access solely because it objected to their reporting and sought an immediate court order restoring credentials. The complaint names Trump and senior officials, contending the action constitutes viewpoint discrimination and a denial of due process.

Trump remained defiant. On his Truth Social platform he wrote that the White House was not attacking a free press, which he said he cherished, but rather “the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America.” He described it as corrupt, coordinated and a threat to national security that “must be stopped, NOW!” Earlier he had attributed the decision to “cumulative stories over the last two years” that he said sought to diminish Republicans and his administration. He also warned that other outlets could face similar treatment.

Vice President JD Vance, a former CNN commentator, told reporters the banned organizations retained free-speech rights and could still report; they simply would no longer receive an office inside the White House. He accused them of spreading “left-wing propaganda.”

The five networks issued a joint statement emphasizing that “the public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.” Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, who chairs the television pool, informed members that coverage of designated presidential pool events would halt effective immediately, with no substitute arranged. Coverage of Congress and other non-presidential events would continue as normal.

The episode marks a sharp escalation in Trump’s long-running conflict with segments of the news media. Press-freedom advocates and the White House Correspondents’ Association have stressed that access cannot be denied arbitrarily or on the basis of content. The banned outlets have vowed to continue reporting on the administration regardless of physical restrictions. Legal proceedings are expected to move quickly, with the outlets seeking emergency relief to reinstate their journalists’ credentials.
