‘God Did Not Make Everyone the Same’ — Kogi Aide Speaks on Prayer Controversy

A viral roadside prayer confrontation in Kogi State has reopened a question Nigeria has been asking for decades: can people of different faiths live with their differences without turning every difference into a battle?

Promise Emmanuel, an aide to the Kogi State Government, has appealed for religious tolerance after a video circulated showing a woman confronting Muslims who were praying by the roadside.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain subject to the full context of the video.

But the wider reaction has turned the incident into another conversation about how Christians and Muslims respond when religious practices occupy shared public spaces.

Emmanuel urged Nigerians to approach such disagreements with tolerance rather than hostility. His intervention comes in a country where Christianity and Islam are both deeply rooted in public life and where religious identity can easily become entangled with politics, ethnicity and community relations.

Humanity before labels

There is a point that should not be lost in arguments about whose religion is right.Humanity should come first.

A Christian does not become less Christian by respecting a Muslim.

A Muslim does not become less Muslim by allowing a Christian to worship peacefully.

Faith can be deeply held without becoming a licence to humiliate another person.

And perhaps the simplest theological point is also the most difficult one for human beings to accept: if God wanted every human being to worship in exactly the same way, He could have made humanity one people.

The Qur’an recognises human diversity and says that God could have made mankind one community. The Bible, meanwhile, repeatedly places love of one’s neighbour at the centre of Christian conduct.

Nigeria’s religious diversity is therefore not an accident that citizens can wish away.It is part of the country.

Public space still requires consideration

Religious tolerance, however, does not mean that public spaces have no rules. Roads belong to everyone. Motorists, pedestrians, traders, emergency responders and worshippers all have legitimate interests. Prayer should not become an excuse to obstruct traffic, just as traffic concerns should not become an excuse to insult people at prayer.

The sensible answer is accommodation. Where worshippers need to use a public space, communities and authorities can work out arrangements that protect both religious practice and public safety.

The danger begins when an ordinary disagreement becomes a religious confrontation.

A video lasts seconds.Its consequences can last much longer. A single argument between a Christian and a Muslim can quickly become “Christians versus Muslims” online, even when the original disagreement involved only a few individuals.

That is precisely why restraint matters. Emmanuel has previously spoken about religious tolerance in Kogi and pointed to the state’s efforts to accommodate Christian worship, including the construction of a chapel at the Government House during the Yahaya Bello administration.

The latest controversy should therefore not become another invitation to religious camps.

Nigeria has enough problems that require Christians and Muslims to stand together.

Banditry does not ask whether its victims attend church or mosque. Poverty does not ask for a person’s denomination. Disease does not check religious identity.

Neither does death. Perhaps that is where the country should begin. Defend your faith sensibly. Respect another person’s humanity. The two do not have to be enemies. ValidViewNetwork reports.
