A Missing Mentor, A Trending Question: Did Funke Akindele and Kamo State Fall Out?

Sometimes in Nollywood, the person who is absent from a premiere can become almost as much of a story as the person standing on the red carpet.

That is what happened after skit maker and filmmaker Akinyoola Ayoola, popularly known as Kamo State, premiered his debut cinema film, Star Lomo, in Lagos on Sunday.

His long-time professional associate and mentor, Funke Akindele, was not at the event. The absence quickly became a subject of online discussion, with some social-media users questioning whether the two had fallen out.

But there is a crucial difference between a missing appearance and a confirmed disagreement. There is currently no public evidence establishing that Akindele and Kamo are no longer on good terms.

A Relationship Built in Public
Kamo’s association with Akindele became especially visible around Everybody Loves Jenifa in 2024. He was involved in the film’s promotion and subsequently appeared in several projects connected to Akindele, including Aiyetoro Town Season 2, Behind The Scenes and Everybody Loves Jenifa.

Akindele also promoted Kamo’s work online and was publicly seen supporting him at different stages of his personal and professional life.

That history explains why her absence from the premiere attracted attention. The public had become accustomed to seeing the two together.

So Where Was Funke?

While Kamo’s Star Lomo premiere was taking place in Lagos, Akindele was reportedly in Ghana, where she was spending time with singer Waje, who is part of the cast of her forthcoming film, The Four.

That provides a documented explanation for her location. What it does not establish is whether she deliberately chose to miss the premiere because of a disagreement with Kamo.

Social media has filled that gap with speculation.
Some users interpreted the absence as evidence of a strained relationship.

Others pointed to Akindele’s previous support for Kamo and argued that one missed premiere should not erase years of collaboration.

Both reactions are part of the online conversation, but neither proves a private disagreement.
