The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s latest nationwide operation has produced a striking combination of success and tragedy.
In one operation, NDLEA operatives arrested a 49-year-old man accused of impersonating a senior police officer while transporting a large consignment of cannabis across state lines.
In another incident in Delta State, an NDLEA officer reportedly drowned while pursuing a suspected drug offender into the River Ethiope.
The two incidents occurred within the same period but are separate operations.
The fake police identity
NDLEA identified the 49-year-old suspect as Innocent Ekpe.
The agency said he was arrested on September 16 along the Benin-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba with 292.48 kilogrammes of skunk concealed inside a Toyota Sienna bus.
According to NDLEA, Ekpe allegedly presented himself as a Deputy Superintendent of Police and used a forged police identification card to avoid security checks.
Another suspect, 39-year-old Nduka Joseph, was also arrested. The arrest formed part of a wider nationwide operation in which NDLEA said it seized more than 1.3 million pills and capsules of tramadol and other opioids, alongside about 6,000 kilogrammes of cannabis.
The combined street value was put by the agency at more than ₦3.4 billion. The scale matters because drug trafficking is no longer simply a matter of someone carrying a small package across a checkpoint.
Criminal networks increasingly rely on transportation systems, financial channels, false identities and legitimate-looking businesses.
A forged police identity is particularly dangerous because checkpoints are designed around trust in official authority.
The Delta tragedy
Hours and days later, the drug fight produced a very different headline. An NDLEA officer reportedly drowned in the Ethiope River at Obiaruku in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State while pursuing a fleeing suspected drug offender.
According to reports, one suspect allegedly jumped into the river while officers attempted to arrest the group.
The officers reportedly followed. One officer was rescued and taken to hospital.Another drowned. The suspected offenders reportedly escaped through the river.
The body of the deceased officer was later recovered. The identities of the officer and suspects had not been independently confirmed in the report, and the NDLEA had not publicly provided a full account of the circumstances.
That caution matters. A video circulating online is not a substitute for an official investigation.
The danger of pursuit
The incident also raises a broader question about operational safety. Law-enforcement officers are trained to pursue suspects, but a pursuit does not always have to become a physical chase into unknown terrain.

Rivers, forests, rooftops and highways create different risks. A suspect who jumps into deep or fast-moving water may be desperate to escape, but an officer following him may face an equally immediate threat.
The loss of an officer during an operation against suspected drug traffickers is therefore a reminder that the drug war has a human cost on both sides of the law.
The NDLEA is confronting increasingly sophisticated criminal networks. The agency says its latest operations have disrupted large quantities of illicit drugs across Lagos, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and the Federal Capital Territory.
But every operation also requires intelligence, coordination and careful risk assessment. The arrest of a suspected trafficker is important.
So is bringing officers home alive. For the families of officers who leave home to fight crime, the greatest victory is not simply another seizure. It is their safe return. ValidViewNetwork reports.
