Lagos-Enugu Flight Delay: NCAA Orders Air Peace to Compensate Passengers

A wrong flight notification has triggered a passenger-compensation process after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority directed Air Peace to compensate travellers affected by a delayed Lagos-Enugu flight.

The flight was scheduled to leave Lagos at 6:45am on Monday, but passengers were later informed of a major delay, with the departure pushed to about 4:50pm.

The NCAA said its preliminary investigation found that passengers had received an incorrect notification from the airline.

How the Delay Unfolded

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, one of the affected passengers, raised the issue publicly after arriving at Terminal One of the Murtala Muhammed Airport at about 5:50am.

He said he had checked in the previous night and expected to travel on the scheduled morning flight. The delay, he said, threatened to make him miss a court appearance in Enugu.

The NCAA subsequently said it would investigate the disruption and directed the airline to develop an appropriate compensation package for affected passengers.

Passenger Rights Come Into Focus

The incident goes beyond one delayed flight.

It raises the question of what passengers can reasonably expect when an airline’s communication about a flight is inaccurate.

The NCAA’s passenger-rights information recognises compensation rights for certain flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, subject to the applicable circumstances and notification requirements.

That distinction is important. Air travel can be disrupted by weather, aircraft availability, operational problems and other factors.

But when passengers receive information that does not accurately reflect the status of their flight, the problem shifts from simple delay to communication and consumer protection.

The NCAA’s response therefore places attention on two separate issues: what caused the flight disruption and whether passengers were properly informed.

A Wider Aviation Question

The episode also comes amid continuing debate about flight delays in Nigeria.

The regulator’s August 2026 domestic-airline disruption summary recorded substantial delays across the sector. Air Peace subsequently disputed aspects of the data and described some of the regulator’s figures and conclusions as inaccurate.

That disagreement is separate from the present Lagos-Enugu incident.What is clear in this case is that the regulator has opened a process that could lead to compensation for affected passengers.

For travellers, the larger test is whether such interventions produce more reliable communication, better disruption management and clearer accountability when flights go wrong.
