MADRID — Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has called for greater respect for referees after his side defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in a heated La Liga derby on Sunday.
The match ended with Real Madrid reduced to 10 men and José Mourinho openly questioning several refereeing decisions.
Mourinho focused particularly on two tackles involving Atlético players Cristian Romero and Lee Kang-in. He argued that both incidents involving Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde deserved red cards.
Valverde was left with a serious ankle injury after one of the challenges, while Real Madrid had already lost Dean Huijsen to a red card.
Mourinho arrived at his post-match press conference with images highlighting the incidents and criticised referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias over his handling of the match.
Simeone took a different approach. The Atlético coach urged Mourinho, one of the most experienced managers in European football, to maintain respect when discussing match officials.
The comments came after Atlético produced a disciplined performance to secure the derby victory. Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David scored for Atlético, while Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back for Real Madrid.
The result moved Atlético to second in La Liga with 16 points. The result also adds another chapter to one of European football’s most intense managerial rivalries.
