Katsina Security Operatives Arrest PoS Dealer Over Alleged Bandit Financing

Banditry does not survive on guns alone.Behind a gunman in the forest can be a network of people who never fire a shot.

Someone provides food. Someone provides motorcycles. Someone moves money. Someone supplies information. Someone provides a phone.

And sometimes, someone running an ordinary business allegedly becomes part of the financial chain.

That is the allegation now facing Isiyaku Nasiru, a PoS operator and motorcycle spare-parts dealer in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Security operatives arrested Nasiru over alleged links to the financial activities of suspected bandit kingpin Kachalla Muhammadu.

According to investigators, Nasiru processed between ₦3 million and ₦5 million daily through PoS transactions linked to the network.

The allegation is still under investigation. Nasiru has not been convicted of financing banditry.

The everyday face of insecurity

The case illustrates a difficult reality about organised crime. The people helping a criminal network do not always look like criminals. They can be traders. Mechanics. Transport operators. Telecommunications agents. Food sellers. Motorcycle dealers. Money handlers.

People who wake up every morning, open their shops and interact with neighbours.

That is what makes criminal networks difficult to dismantle. The gunman may be in the forest, but the support system can operate in the marketplace.

What would motivate someone?

Money is an obvious possibility. Fear can also play a role. Some people may cooperate because they have been threatened.

Others may believe that helping a powerful criminal figure provides protection.

Some may convince themselves that they are merely doing business and have no responsibility for what happens to the money afterwards.

But once a person knowingly helps an armed criminal network obtain money, logistics or supplies, the line between ordinary business and criminal support can disappear.

And that support can prolong violence.

A bandit needs ammunition. He needs motorcycles. He needs food. He needs communication. He needs money.

Remove those support systems and the operational capacity of the criminal network becomes harder to sustain.

There is a simple way to understand the danger.

Trying to support a violent criminal network because it pays can be like keeping a Bengal tiger cub in the house because it is profitable.

At first, you think you control the relationship. You feed it. It leaves you alone. You make money.

Then the tiger becomes stronger.

Eventually, it may not care who fed it.

That is the long-term danger of normalising criminal networks. Communities can become dependent on people who are simultaneously destroying the security of those communities.

The allegation against Nasiru therefore matters beyond one PoS shop.

If investigators establish that legitimate businesses are being used to move millions of naira for armed groups, the response must target the financial infrastructure as well as the fighters.

But the process must remain evidence-based.

An arrested suspect is not automatically a convicted criminal. The allegations must be investigated, evidence presented and guilt established by a competent court.
