ValidViewNetwork reports that Morocco has appointed Fatima Zahra El Mansouri as its first female prime minister.
King Mohammed VI appointed the 50-year-old lawyer after her Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emerged strongly from the country’s recent parliamentary elections.
The appointment marks the first time a woman has been named head of government in Morocco.
Mansouri previously served as mayor of Marrakesh and as minister responsible for housing and urban policy. She now faces the task of forming a government, likely involving coalition negotiations.
Her responsibilities will include addressing economic pressures, employment and inflation while overseeing preparations for Morocco’s role in the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
Her appointment also has wider significance for women’s political participation in the Arab world. She becomes one of only a small number of women to have headed a government in the region. ValidViewNetwork reports.
