America Turns September 25 Into a Celebration of Dolly Parton

One month after Dolly Parton’s death, parts of America have found a different way to mourn: they are turning September 25 into a celebration of the life she left behind.

Across parts of the United States, September 25 has taken on a new meaning for Dolly Parton’s fans, with cities and states declaring the date Dolly Parton Day in honour of the late country music legend.

The observance came barely a month after Parton’s death at the age of 80, turning what might have been an ordinary date on the calendar into a nationwide celebration of her music, philanthropy and cultural influence.

According to The Guardian, celebrations included parades, karaoke, live music and other public events.

But the tribute is not built entirely around music.

Parton’s reputation has also been closely associated with literacy and charitable work, particularly through the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides books to children.

September 25 was chosen in part because its numerical form, 9/25, echoes the title of Parton’s famous song “9 to 5”, one of the defining records of her career.

California has formally established September 25 as Dolly Parton Day, while communities in Tennessee, including Sevier County, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, also marked the date with local celebrations.

The timing has added emotional weight to the observance.

Parton died on August 25, aged 80, and was later buried in a private family ceremony in Nashville. Her death prompted tributes across music, entertainment and public life.

For fans, however, the September celebration provides an opportunity to move beyond mourning and focus on the legacy she left behind.
