AGBARHO — Three days of torrential rainfall have left sections of the critical Agbarho-Ughelli Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State impassable, stranding motorists and forcing lengthy detours on one of the state’s busiest corridors.

The downpour, which began over the weekend and continued into the early part of the week, submerged parts of the highway near the Agbarho Police Station and surrounding stretches. Rising floodwaters cut off half the carriageway, turning routine journeys between Agbarho, Ughelli, Effurun and neighbouring communities into slow, hazardous struggles.

Commuters were left stranded for hours while vehicles heading into Ughelli from Effurun and Agbarho sought alternative routes.

A section of the East-West Road at the Uvwiama/Orido Junction also failed after the rains weakened the infrastructure. Reports linked the damage to a collapsed culvert, compounded by a petroleum tanker that broke down on another portion of the highway.

Eyewitnesses said the recent flooding had undermined the roadbed, leaving motorists to squeeze through limited space or abandon the route entirely. By Tuesday afternoon, efforts were still underway to clear the tanker while traffic crawled on the remaining flooded lane.

The disruption forms part of broader flooding that has hit communities across Udu, Uvwie, Warri, Ughelli, Agbarho, Okpe and Ughelli South.

Homes, schools, hotels and businesses were inundated after an extended downpour, with residents packing belongings and economic activity grinding to a halt in several areas. In Agbarho itself, floodwater overran the Effurun-Agbarho stretch of the East-West Road and spilled into communities including Uvwiamuge, Orhokpokpo, Oguname, Ohrerhe, Uvwiama, Oghara, Oviri and others, overwhelming entry points around Orido, Esiso and Oviri Junctions.

Francis Sadhere, a stranded commuter, described the ordeal: “We were stranded. The depth of the water was much, and the difficulty of getting through was not an easy one.”

Another road user, identified only as Tony, urged authorities to fix the flooding and improve drainage along the affected section before further rains worsen the damage.

Residents and travellers have appealed to the Delta State Government, the Federal Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for urgent intervention to drain the road, repair the failed section and strengthen the drainage system. They warned that prolonged flooding risks further disruption to transport and local commerce on the busy route.

Calls mount for Julius Berger to fix alternative routes

At the same time, frustration is mounting in Ughelli over traffic congestion linked to the ongoing Otovwodo flyover project. Commuters and residents have called on Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the contractor handling the ₦39.3 billion multi-span flyover at Otovwodo Junction, to urgently maintain and upgrade alternative roads around the axis.

The flyover, flagged off earlier this year by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as a permanent solution to chronic gridlock at one of Delta’s busiest junctions along the East-West Road, has shifted heavy traffic onto temporary routes.

While the state government earlier constructed alternative streets—including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru, Edo and Royal Avenue linking Agbarha-Otor Road—at a cost of nearly ₦6 billion, residents say these paths have deteriorated. Poor conditions, damaged entry points and inadequate drainage have turned short trips into lengthy ordeals, especially at peak periods and weekends.

Bernard Ewofurama said the traffic has grown worse: “If the alternative roads are properly maintained, it will make vehicle movements easier and reduce the sufferings.” Choice Grandball added that keeping the routes in good condition would ease pressure without requiring extraordinary measures. Faith Iguruwe, who endured more than two hours of delay on a recent Saturday, including pedestrians trapped in the jam, said: “We commend the state government for awarding this project, however Julius Berger should be able to put the alternate roads in good bearing to ease the suffering of the people, otherwise that is negligence… Please, Julius Berger should immediately come and fix them because the suffering is getting too much.”

Commercial drivers report higher vehicle wear and fuel use, while passengers say the delays disrupt work and businesses. Residents want routine grading, drainage clearing, obstruction removal and regular monitoring so the alternatives remain usable while construction continues. They also urge government agencies and community stakeholders to develop a sustainable traffic-management plan rather than waiting until the routes become fully impassable.

The twin crises of flood-damaged main roads and strained diversions underscore long-standing concerns over drainage infrastructure and road resilience in the area. With the rainy season still active and the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre having flagged heightened risks for Delta communities, urgent action on both the Agbarho-Ughelli highway and the Otovwodo alternatives remains critical to restoring reliable movement for residents, traders and transporters.
