Nigeria’s New Envoy Presents Credentials to King Philippe

His Excellency Adeyemi Adebayo Emmanuel, PhD, has formally begun his tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium after presenting his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Philippe at the Royal Palace of Brussels on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.

In a ceremony that also saw other foreign envoys received by the Belgian monarch, Ambassador Adeyemi conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to the King, the Belgian government and the people of Belgium on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Following the formal presentation, the Nigerian envoy was granted a private audience with King Philippe. The two discussed matters of mutual interest, with particular focus on ways to deepen the longstanding bilateral relationship between Abuja and Brussels. Officials noted that the talks underscored opportunities for expanded cooperation in trade and investment, development partnership, education, technology and other priority sectors.

The presentation marks the official start of Ambassador Adeyemi’s diplomatic mission in Belgium. He concurrently represents Nigeria to Luxembourg and to the institutions of the European Union, a posting widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most strategically important in Europe. Brussels serves as a critical gateway for Nigerian engagement with the EU on trade, migration, energy, technology and security issues, while the Port of Antwerp-Bruges remains a major entry point for Nigerian exports into European markets.

Ambassador Adeyemi had already begun informal engagements in the Belgian capital earlier in the year. In July he met the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), where discussions centred on Nigeria’s role in the organisation’s reform agenda, the Malabo Declaration, institutional renewal and the proposed OACPS African Diaspora Centre in Nigeria. In August he held a bilateral meeting with Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Belgium, focusing on cooperation within the Group of African Ambassadors in Brussels and South-South collaboration.

Nigeria and Belgium share decades of diplomatic ties built on mutual respect and practical economic links. Recent efforts have included moves to finalise a Bilateral Air Services Agreement aimed at establishing direct air connectivity, a step both sides view as essential for boosting trade, investment and people-to-people contacts. The new ambassador’s arrival comes as Nigeria continues to prioritise economic diplomacy and stronger partnerships with European capitals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja described the credential ceremony as a reaffirmation of the warmth and depth of relations between the two countries. With his formal accreditation now complete, Ambassador Adeyemi is expected to intensify efforts to advance Nigeria’s interests across Belgium, Luxembourg and the broader European institutional landscape.
