Coup Trial: Army Delays Ruling Again, Sets October 5

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the Nigerian Army has postponed the ruling in the alleged coup trial involving some military officers for the fourth time.

The General Court Martial is now scheduled to deliver its ruling on Monday, October 5, 2026.

The development means the officers facing the proceedings will have to wait several more days for the court’s decision on the issues before it.

The ruling had been expected on Wednesday, September 30, but the Army announced another postponement. The new sitting is scheduled for 10am at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja.

A notice signed by Major M.U. Ardo, the Liaison Officer, communicated the postponement. The Army did not state a reason for the latest adjournment.

WHAT THE COUP CASE IS ABOUT

The proceedings arise from allegations of an attempt to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The accused officers have faced proceedings before a General Court Martial, with the prosecution presenting its case and the defence challenging aspects of the evidence against them.

One of the significant disputes has centred on statements allegedly obtained from some of the accused. The defence has challenged the admissibility of those statements, arguing that they were not voluntarily obtained.

That dispute led to a trial-within-a-trial, a separate proceeding used to determine whether disputed statements were voluntarily made and can therefore be admitted as evidence.

The ruling now being awaited is connected to that legal dispute. The postponement does not amount to a conviction or acquittal of the accused officers.

The allegations remain before the military court.
