OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — The multi-day search for 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who vanished on the Fourth of July, ended in heartbreak on Monday after officials recovered a body on the shores of Horn Island.
The discovery was made by a park ranger at approximately 8:45 a.m. on the island’s northwest end. While official identification is pending the results of DNA testing, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter and Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. have both confirmed that the recovered body matches the physical description of the missing college student.
In a poignant statement shared on social media Monday afternoon, Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, confirmed the loss of her son. “His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” she wrote. “My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul.”
Wells, an Ocean Springs native and a promising wide receiver for the Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) football team, was last seen on the island around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. He had been visiting the barrier island—a remote destination accessible only by boat—with a group of friends during the holiday weekend.
Following his disappearance, a massive, multi-agency search operation was launched, involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and Gulf Islands National Seashore authorities. The grassroots volunteer group United Cajun Navy also provided critical assistance, deploying aerial and ground teams to comb the island’s rugged terrain. With the discovery of the body, those search efforts have been officially suspended.
As the community mourns, tributes for the young athlete have begun to pour in. J. Steven Bishop, president of SMCC, expressed the school’s deep sorrow, describing Wells as an “exemplary student, athlete, friend, and teammate.”
The cause of death remains unknown. The body has been transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Authorities have asked for privacy for the family as they navigate this period of grief and wait for further forensic findings.
Amid the investigation, the family has also issued a warning to the public regarding potential fraud, noting that they have not authorized any GoFundMe campaigns at this time and cautioning against suspicious online solicitations.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
