JOS, Plateau State — The girl cannot speak. She cannot hear. She was thirteen years old when she was allegedly taken into the care of a soldier’s family in Taraba State.
By the time anyone outside that household learned what had happened, she was pregnant.
The Nigerian Army has now confirmed that it is investigating Captain Etim Essien, a serving officer attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos, over allegations of sexual abuse, rape and the impregnation of the deaf, non-speaking minor.
The case first surfaced through a report by SaharaReporters in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The Army’s statement, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 3 Division, was issued on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
It said the Army was “aware of reports circulating online,” that it takes “all allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness,” and that “appropriate steps have been initiated to establish the facts”.
The statement also noted that civilian authorities are independently investigating and that the Army would “cooperate fully with them to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated”.
The Gap Between Statement and Silence
But here is what the Army’s statement did not say. It did not say who removed the girl from her family. It did not say how a deaf, non-speaking child came to be living under the care of a military officer’s household.
It did not say who noticed the pregnancy, who reported it, or how long the child carried a child of her own before anyone intervened.
Those questions remain unanswered as of Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The involvement of the Taraba State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, the National Human Rights Commission and other agencies suggests that this is not a case that can be resolved quietly within the military’s internal disciplinary mechanisms.
Sexual abuse of a minor is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
It does not stop being a crime because the accused wears a uniform.
A Vulnerable Child, A Powerful Institution
The girl at the centre of this case belongs to a category of Nigerians whose voices are almost never heard: children with disabilities, placed in the care of adults, with no ability to speak for themselves.
She could not scream for help.
She could not tell anyone what was happening.
And if the allegations are true, she was trapped in a house where the person abusing her held every advantage, age, gender, authority, and the implicit power of the uniform.
The Army’s statement emphasised its “high premium on discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity” and warned that “any personnel found to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations will be dealt with appropriately”.
That is the right language. But the proof will be in the outcome.
The Trust That Uniforms Carry — And Break
Nigeria’s military institutions are built on the trust that citizens place in those who wear the uniform.
That trust is fragile.
Every case in which an officer is accused of preying on the vulnerable, a child, a deaf girl, a dependent, weakens it further.

The Army has rightly cautioned against “reaching conclusions” before the facts are established.
But the girl who cannot speak deserves something more than a carefully drafted statement.
She deserves a thorough, transparent investigation. She deserves protection.
And she deserves to know that the uniform that was supposed to protect her does not protect her abuser.
