Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has declared Monday a work-free day to honour the late elder statesman and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
The declaration forms part of a three-day official mourning period enacted across the state following the death of the former civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State, who passed away at the age of 90.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, Governor Fintiri noted that the work-free day is designed to afford residents the opportunity to pay their final respects and reflect on the monumental legacies left behind by the late icon.
”Adamawa has lost an Iroko tree. His wisdom, generosity and commitment to development will be greatly missed,” Fintiri stated, describing the deceased as a towering political patriarch and national architect.
The statesman was laid to rest on Sunday in Yola following solemn funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace, which drew an immense assembly of political heavyweights, business moguls—including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote—traditional rulers, and sympathisers from across the country.
Throughout the three-day mourning period, all flags across Adamawa State will fly at half-mast. While the government has urged citizens to use the period to offer prayers for the repose of the departed soul and comfort for the bereaved family, it directed that institutions and establishments providing essential services must remain fully operational.
