Uganda has buried King Oyo, who became monarch at three. His death triggered a fierce succession dispute over an alleged son and a journalist prince.
The boy king is gone.
The throne is already contested.
For three decades, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was one of Africa’s most recognisable traditional rulers.
He became king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom in 1995. He was only three years old.
On Saturday, September 12, Uganda buried him at the Karambi Royal Tombs.
He was 34.
But the funeral was never simply about saying goodbye.It also marked the beginning of an extraordinary succession battle.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Oyo’s death in the United States on August 27, where he was receiving cancer treatment, left the Tooro royal family divided over who should inherit the throne.
The royal clan eventually selected his cousin, Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma.
Kijanangoma is a journalist and news anchor who has worked with Uganda’s state broadcasting network.
Then came the alleged son
The dispute became more complicated when members of Oyo’s family claimed that the late king had left a will naming a biological son as his successor.
The child had not been publicly known before the succession dispute.
His identity and claim have not been independently established.
Oyo’s mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and his sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, opposed the decision to install Kijanangoma.
They argued that Oyo’s wishes should determine the succession.
The royal clan took a different position.
It selected Kijanangoma.
Ugandan authorities then became involved because the succession was tied to the traditional funeral process.
The government reportedly held talks with members of the royal family before the burial.
A throne without political power, but plenty of weight
The Tooro king does not govern Uganda politically.
But the throne carries enormous cultural influence.It also comes with control over royal property, land and government allocations.
That helps explain why the succession has become much more than a family disagreement.
On Saturday, Kijanangoma formally assumed the throne through a traditional ritual.
He cast nine coffee berries into Oyo’s grave.
The symbolism was striking.
One king was being buried.
Another was beginning his reign.
Oyo’s life had already carried unusual historical weight.
He became a global figure after ascending the throne as a toddler.
He later became a UN goodwill ambassador in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
He also maintained relationships with prominent international figures, including the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Yet his most difficult royal episode may have come after his death.
What happens now?
The alleged son’s claim remains the biggest unresolved question.
If the family continues to challenge the succession, the dispute could move beyond royal discussions and into formal legal proceedings.
For now, the Tooro Kingdom has a new king.
But the shadow of the old king remains over the throne.
