Plateau Bloodbath: 13 Dead as Gunmen Strike Jos South, Mangu,Riyom

​Tragedy struck Plateau State on Sunday night as suspected terrorists launched coordinated attacks across Jos South, Mangu, and Riyom Local Government Areas, leaving at least 13 persons dead and several others with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

​The onslaught included a brutal ambush in the Dungus community of Jos South LGA, where nine of the victims—who were passengers traveling in a commercial vehicle heading toward Jos—were cut down in a hail of bullets. According to Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders (BYM), the deadly incident occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m.

​”The victims were all passengers traveling to Jos when the terrorists opened fire on the vehicle,” Tengwong stated, confirming that the casualties included a member of Operation Rainbow, the state-backed security outfit. Survivors with critical gunshot wounds were rushed to nearby medical facilities, where local sources confirmed some unfortunately succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.

​Simultaneously, the violence spread to other parts of the state. In Mangu Local Government Area, assailants raided the Vodni community within the Pushit District under the cover of darkness, executing two individuals and leaving four others severely wounded. Concurrently, a separate midnight raid in Tahoos village, located in Riyom Local Government Area, claimed another two lives.

​The latest wave of violence compounds an already tense security situation in the region, trailing a string of recent community clashes and tactical assaults across the rural councils.

​As of press time, official comments from the Plateau State Police Command and military authorities regarding the coordinated strikes remained unavailable, even as frantic efforts to reach security spokespersons proved abortive. Meanwhile, survivors and injured victims continue to receive medical attention in hospitals across the affected zones.
