“My Daddy”: Desmond Elliot’s Apology Reveals the Cost of Political Independence

For a man who spent years building a political identity around loyalty to Femi Gbajabiamila, Desmond Elliot’s latest gesture was striking.

He went on his knees.

“I’m sorry, my daddy,” Elliot said as he apologised to Gbajabiamila.

The words may sound personal.

The politics behind them are not.

For years, Elliot and Gbajabiamila represented a familiar Nigerian political relationship: the rising politician and the established leader who helped open the door.

Elliot entered the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015 after leaving behind a successful acting career.

He returned in 2019 and again in 2023.

Surulere became his political territory.

Gbajabiamila became one of the most important figures in that political journey.

But political relationships can become complicated when ambition meets succession.

That happened in Surulere in 2026.

Elliot wanted a fourth term in the Lagos Assembly.

Gbajabiamila, who had become President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, backed Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, a former Lagos Special Adviser on Housing.

The contest quickly became more than an ordinary party primary.

It became a test of influence.

Elliot insisted publicly that he would not step aside.

He also said Gbajabiamila had not personally asked him to withdraw and continued to refer to him as his leader.

Behind the scenes, however, the disagreement was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

There was already history.

Elliot had also found himself caught in the controversy surrounding the attempted removal of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in January 2025.

He denied masterminding the move and said he was outside Nigeria when the process began.

Then came the Surulere battle.Political supporters divided.

Some stakeholders accused Elliot of overstaying his political welcome.

Others argued that he deserved another opportunity.

Nollywood colleagues publicly rallied behind him.

Gbajabiamila’s camp backed a different candidate.

Eventually, Elliot withdrew from the race.

Then came the apology.

That is why the kneeling matters.

It was not simply an actor apologising to an older friend.

It was a politician repairing a relationship with a man who had played a major role in his political journey.

There is a lesson in this.

Nigerian politics often presents itself as a battle between loyalty and independence.

A politician needs a godfather to enter the room, but eventually wants to prove that he can remain there without the godfather.

That transition rarely happens quietly.

Elliot’s case is a particularly visible example because his political journey began with a remarkable crossover from entertainment into elective politics.

He went from performing before cameras to legislating inside the Lagos Assembly.

Now, after 11 years in politics, his fourth-term ambition has ended.

But the relationship that helped shape that journey may survive the disagreement.

That appears to be what the apology was about.

Politics is full of victories that last four years.

Relationships can last much longer.

The ballot decides elections.

It does not decide everything.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Elliot’s apology followed months of political tension surrounding his fourth-term ambition and the battle over who should represent Surulere Constituency I.

The episode also offers a reminder of one of Nigerian politics’ oldest realities: sometimes the hardest political battle is not between strangers.

It is between people who once stood on the same side.
