Uniting Forces to Protect Public Wealth
In a decisive push to tighten the net on economic sabotage and financial malfeasance, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sealed separate strategic partnerships with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Uyo.
The high-level engagements underscore a growing consensus among Nigerian security and law enforcement institutions: tackling sophisticated financial crimes demands an integrated, multi-agency front that bridges federal oversight with grassroots intelligence.
Customs and EFCC: Securing Revenue and Trade
During a strategic visit to the EFCC’s Uyo Zonal Command, the Acting Area Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Cross River State Area Command, DC Nkeiru Ijeoma Nwala, underscored the urgent imperative to deepen operational synergy. She noted that safeguarding government revenue, enforcing trade regulations, and regulating import-export frameworks frequently intersect with matters requiring specialized anti-corruption intervention.

Highlighting the need for seamless institutional cooperation, Nwala advocated for robust information sharing and streamlined referral mechanisms to ensure swift, coordinated responses to trade-related fraud and suspicious financial transactions.
Welcoming the delegation, the Uyo Zonal Director of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Oshodi Johnson, lauded the initiative, stressing that public resources are vital for national development and cannot be left vulnerable to diversion.
Johnson issued a stern warning regarding the rising wave of online fraud, particularly criminal syndicates exploiting government identities.
”No single agency could effectively discharge these responsibilities in isolation. People still impersonate government agencies and officials and defraud innocent citizens under that guise. They put up fake auction adverts with names and photographs of your officers for exploitation,” Johnson cautioned.
He urged both institutions to maintain open communication channels, bypass bureaucratic bottlenecks, and actively educate the public never to pay money into individual accounts for government auctions.
Grassroots Vigilance: Tapping Local Networks
In a parallel development, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), spearheaded by its Akwa Ibom State Commander, Mr. Joshua M. Dickson, paid a working visit to the anti-graft agency to explore grassroots intelligence-sharing frameworks.
Dickson stated that the VGN is repositioning its extensive community network to bolster the EFCC’s surveillance and information-gathering operations, aligning with broader national security directives.

Responding to the delegation, Johnson praised the group’s dedication to national service. He charged members to remain vigilant, leverage the wisdom of veteran colleagues, and report suspicious activities—particularly unexplained, sudden lifestyle changes that often signal illicit wealth. Johnson reiterated that while eradicating crime entirely remains an uphill battle, collaborative stakeholder action remains the most potent tool for curbing financial corruption across Nigeria.
