The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has identified two suspected Ebola cases in Nigeria’s North-East region, isolating the individuals and commencing contact tracing as laboratory tests are conducted to determine whether they have contracted the virus.
The update, issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, stressed that the classification of the individuals as suspected cases did not mean they had tested positive, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE UPDATE
According to the NCDC, the two individuals had been isolated, while contact identification and listing were ongoing.
Laboratory tests were also being conducted to establish whether they had contracted the virus. The agency stressed that confirmation would depend on laboratory results and urged Nigerians to remain calm but vigilant.
THE STATES’ RESPONSE
Although the NCDC did not identify the states where the suspected cases were detected, the development prompted renewed attention to disease surveillance across the region.
In Borno State, the government said it was strengthening disease surveillance and emergency preparedness.
In Taraba State, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Bordiya Gbansheya Buma, said there were no suspected Ebola cases in the state, while assuring residents that surveillance mechanisms had been strengthened.
In Gombe State, the Commissioner for Health, Prof Adamu Danladi Bojude, also assured residents that no Ebola case had been reported in the state.
THE CONTEXT
The development comes barely two weeks after Nigeria confirmed its first imported Ebola case in more than a decade—a traveller from Uganda who was diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
The NCDC has urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation, and comply with public health advisories to reduce the risk of infection.
WHY IT MATTERS
Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses known to science. The 2014 outbreak in West Africa killed more than 11,000 people.
Nigeria’s swift response at the time, led by the late Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, was widely praised for preventing a wider catastrophe.
The identification of two suspected cases in the North-East is a reminder that the threat is not over. The NCDC’s decision to isolate the individuals and begin contact tracing is the correct response.
But it also highlights the importance of vigilance, early detection, and public cooperation. For now, the tests are ongoing. The contacts are being monitored. And the nation is waiting for the results. ValidViewNetwork reports.
