Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has launched a direct attack on President Bola Tinubu, declaring that the President is tired and lacks the energy required to lead Nigeria, and urging him to go home and rest.
The remarks were made on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in Cross River State, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE ATTACK
Obi did not mince words.”President Tinubu is tired. He does not have the energy for the job. He should go home,” Obi said .
He called for leadership built on competence, capacity, compassion, and commitment, arguing that Nigeria needs someone capable of understanding the challenges facing ordinary citizens and providing solutions.
He said the country should be governed in a way that gives every Nigerian equal opportunities, regardless of their background, social status, or circumstances of birth.
THE CONTRAST
Obi’s criticism of Tinubu’s energy comes just days after the NDC campaign team acknowledged that Obi himself was experiencing exhaustion from his demanding political schedule.
The party’s Deputy Campaign Spokesperson, Dr Sam Omale, said on Tuesday that Obi had been travelling frequently between different locations and needed rest.
“Sometimes I wonder where he gets his energy from. He is in London today and the following morning in Enugu. I’m wondering how he does it. Exhaustion comes in; he is a human being,” Omale said .
The contrast between Obi’s criticism of Tinubu’s energy and his own campaign’s admission of exhaustion has not gone unnoticed by political observers.
WHY IT MATTERS
Obi’s statement is a calculated political move. By framing the 2027 election as a choice between a tired incumbent and a energetic challenger, he is attempting to draw a sharp contrast between himself and the President.
But the attack also carries risks. Tinubu’s supporters will point to Obi’s own exhaustion as evidence of hypocrisy. And voters may question whether a candidate who is himself tired should be lecturing others about energy.
The campaign has begun. The personal attacks have started. And the question of who has the stamina to lead Nigeria for the next four years is now at the centre of the 2027 contest. ValidViewNetwork reports.
