Nursing students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, are facing a mandatory payment of N200,000 for professional examinations, a fee that has sparked concerns about the rising cost of nursing education and its impact on the production of healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
The N200,000 exams fee has become a significant burden for students and their families, many of whom are already struggling with the cost of tuition and living expenses, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE FEE
The N200,000 fee is charged for the professional examinations conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the regulatory body responsible for licensing nurses in the country.
The fee is separate from the university’s tuition and other academic charges.
For many students, the additional cost is prohibitive. It raises the question of whether nursing education is becoming accessible only to those who can afford it, rather than those who are qualified and passionate about the profession.
THE BROADER CONCERNS
The high cost of professional examinations is not unique to UNIZIK. Across Nigeria, nursing students face significant financial barriers to obtaining their licenses, including examination fees, registration fees, and other associated costs.
In a country with a severe shortage of healthcare workers, these fees create a paradox: the government is investing in training nurses, but the cost of licensing may prevent them from entering the workforce.
WHY IT MATTERS
Nurses are the backbone of Nigeria’s healthcare system. They are the first point of contact for most patients, and they provide critical care in hospitals, clinics, and communities across the country.
If the cost of becoming a nurse becomes prohibitive, the quality and availability of healthcare will suffer.
The students who are being asked to pay N200,000 are the future of the profession. If they cannot afford to take their exams, they cannot practice.
And if they cannot practice, the patients who need them will be left without care. The fee may be necessary to maintain the standards of the profession.
But the burden must be shared.
The government, the universities, and the regulatory bodies must work together to ensure that the cost of becoming a nurse is not a barrier to those who are called to serve.
The students have spoken. The question is whether anyone is listening. ValidViewNetwork reports.
