Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni on Wednesday reshuffled the military leadership of the West African country, nearly a year after a failed coup and as the nation faces a growing jihadist threat to its north.
The Benin president reshuffles army chiefs decision saw new heads appointed for the army, navy, and air force, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE NEW APPOINTMENTS
Wadagni named General Abou Issa to replace General Fructeux Gbaguidi, who is to become the permanent secretary of the National Defence and Security Council.
Colonel Andre Dokoui Fofo was named head of the land-based military, Colonel Herve Setondji Allotchenou will take charge of the air force, and Captain Dossa Hounkpatin takes the helm of the navy.
THE CONTEXT
The reshuffle comes nearly a year after the Beninese army pushed back an attempt by some officers to overthrow Wadagni’s predecessor, Patrice Talon, in December 2025.
France and Nigeria helped to foil the plot, and Talon said at the time that the “situation is completely under control” thanks to loyalist soldiers .
Wadagni, who spent 10 years as the country’s economy minister, took the top job in April 2026 with the worsening security situation in the north chief among his in-tray.
Fighters affiliated with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State group have been running rampant over the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger .
That task has been complicated by Benin’s frayed relations with its Sahel neighbours, which are all run by juntas distrustful of Benin’s close ties with France .
WHY IT MATTERS
Benin is on the front line of the Sahel’s security crisis. The jihadist insurgency that has destabilised Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger is now knocking on Benin’s door, and the country’s military leadership must be prepared to respond.
The reshuffle is also a political signal. Wadagni, a former economy minister, is asserting his authority over the armed forces and signalling that he will not tolerate another coup attempt.
The appointment of General Issa, a trusted figure, is a calculated move to ensure loyalty at the top of the military hierarchy.
The new chiefs have taken command. The threat remains. And Benin is watching its northern borders with growing anxiety. ValidViewNetwork reports.
