The Kano State Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of Ali Suleiman following the gruesome allegation that he murdered his wife, Maryam Nababa Badamasi, a mere eight weeks after their wedding.
The prosecution’s case paints a chilling portrait of a marriage motivated by greed rather than companionship. According to the charges, Suleiman allegedly orchestrated the killing of his young bride to seize control of her substantial family inheritance. Maryam, who hailed from a prominent and wealthy family in Kano, was reportedly targeted specifically for her financial standing.
During the arraignment, Prosecuting Counsel Aisha Habibu Hassan emphasized the gravity of the crime, classifying it as culpable homicide—a capital offense under Nigerian law. Hassan formally requested that the court allow additional time for the Ministry of Justice to provide comprehensive legal advice and for the police to finalize their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Presiding Magistrate Sadiya Zakirai granted the prosecution’s application, ruling that the defendant remains in custody. The case has sent shockwaves through the Kano community, sparking intense discussions regarding the protection of domestic violence victims and the rise of “inheritance-motivated” crimes.
The defendant is expected to remain in a correctional facility until the next adjourned date, pending further legal direction.
