The Nigeria Police Force has issued a nationwide security alert over intelligence indicating possible coordinated terrorist attacks on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations.
The alert was contained in a wireless communication dated September 13 and circulated to senior police formations across the country.
According to the police communication, intelligence points to increased mobilisation by terrorist elements for possible attacks across parts of Nigeria.
The North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West were identified as areas requiring heightened vigilance.
The police also reported intelligence indicating movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.
The Force said suspected ISWAP operatives and local collaborators were conducting surveillance and reconnaissance of potential targets.
Schools have been identified as a particular concern because of the resumption of the 2026/2027 academic session.
The police warned that terrorists could exploit the return of students and staff to schools to cause mass casualties.
The security warning also comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising concern that terrorist groups could seek to create fear and destabilise communities before the polls.
The police have consequently ordered commanders to increase surveillance, patrols, stop-and-search operations and access control around vulnerable locations.
Commissioners of Police were also directed to tighten security around state borders, entry and exit routes and other critical approaches.
The Force asked its commands to work closely with other security agencies, school authorities, religious leaders and the National Youth Service Corps to strengthen intelligence sharing and early-warning systems.
For millions of Nigerians, the warning is a reminder that security threats are no longer confined to conventional conflict zones.Schools, worship centres and youth camps remain places where large numbers of people gather, making them vulnerable if adequate protection fails.
The police have therefore urged vigilance and proactive action rather than waiting for an attack before responding.
The latest alert comes as Nigeria approaches another politically sensitive period, with the 2027 elections already shaping public discourse.
