“A Contest of Guns and Fear”: Gunmen Attack NDC Meeting in Enugu Ahead of 2027

Political tension ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections has taken a violent turn in Enugu after suspected gunmen disrupted a meeting of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

The party said eight of its members sustained gunshot injuries during the attack. The incident reportedly occurred during a ward-level political meeting in the state.

The NDC has released the names of the members it said were injured and called for an investigation into the attack.

Police also confirmed that armed men disrupted political meetings in the area and said an investigation had been ordered.

The conflicting accounts over the number of injured people make it important for the authorities to establish the facts.

What is not in dispute is that gunmen reportedly disrupted a political gathering with violence.

That should concern every Nigerian.

Political disagreement is normal in a democracy.
Political violence is not.

The NDC condemned the attack and described it as an attempt to intimidate its members. The party has called on security agencies to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

The incident also comes at a sensitive moment.

The 2027 elections are already generating intense competition among political parties, with defections, alliances, endorsements and rival campaign structures emerging across the country.

If political meetings begin to attract armed attacks, the danger goes beyond one party or one state. It threatens the ability of Nigerians to participate freely in the political process.

A democracy cannot function properly if citizens must calculate the security risk before attending a party meeting.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the reported attack on NDC members in Enugu has added to growing concerns over political violence ahead of the 2027 elections.

The authorities must establish what happened, identify those responsible and ensure that political competition does not become a contest of guns, fear and intimidation.
