A 32-year-old woman has been arrested in Anambra after her seven-year-old daughter was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse over an accusation that she took meat from a cooking pot.

The girl, identified as Oluebube Ofoma, was reportedly injured with a hot knife in Ibollo community, Awada-Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area.

Police said the mother, Ogechi Ofoma, was arrested on Sunday after community security personnel and residents intervened.

The child was rescued and taken into protective care.

The Anambra State Police Command said preliminary information indicated that the girl suffered severe physical injuries, including injuries allegedly inflicted with a hot knife.

The command said it was working with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure that the child receives urgent medical treatment and appropriate welfare support.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the investigation would be thorough and that the welfare and safety of the child remained paramount.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about child abuse and the punishment of children inside homes.

A child’s alleged theft of food, even if established, cannot justify brutal physical violence.

The case also highlights the importance of neighbours and community members speaking up when children are at risk.

In this instance, the intervention of residents and community security personnel helped bring the alleged abuse to the attention of the authorities.

The mother remains an accused person, and the allegations will have to be established through the proper process.

But the child’s immediate welfare remains the priority.

ValidViewNetwork reports that police have arrested the mother and begun an investigation after the seven-year-old girl was allegedly injured with a hot knife over an accusation involving stolen meat.

The case is another painful reminder that protecting children cannot be left to government agencies alone.

Families, neighbours, schools and communities all have a role to play when a child’s safety is at risk.
