Nigeria Pumps 1.68m Barrels a Day: Four Months Inside OPEC Quota, But Where Is the Benefit?

Nigeria’s oil production rose slightly in August, reaching an average of 1,677,777 barrels per day when crude oil and condensates are combined.

The figure represents a 0.4 per cent increase from July and keeps Nigeria within its OPEC crude oil production quota for the fourth consecutive month.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission disclosed the figures in its latest production statistics.Crude oil alone, excluding condensates, averaged 1,500,190 barrels per day during the month.

Daily combined production ranged from 1.64 million barrels at the lowest point to 1.71 million barrels at the highest.

The improvement was modest, but the regulator linked it partly to the resolution of operational problems involving the Single Buoy Mooring at the Erha field.

The restoration of normal evacuation and production operations at the facility helped lift overall output.

Bonny Terminal recorded the highest average output among the listed terminals, producing about 320,040 barrels per day.

Forcados followed with 317,400 barrels per day, while Qua Iboe recorded about 171,720 barrels per day.

The numbers matter because crude oil remains central to Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and government revenue.

Higher production can mean more crude available for export, stronger government receipts and improved foreign exchange supply.

But there is a bigger question.

What does rising oil production mean for the Nigerian who does not work in the oil industry?

That question has become harder to avoid as Nigerians continue to deal with high living costs, fuel prices and pressure on household income.

Producing more oil is important. Keeping production within the OPEC quota is also significant.

Yet production figures alone do not improve living standards.

The real test is whether increased output eventually translates into stronger public finances, more investment, better infrastructure and a more stable economy.

The country has never struggled simply because it could not produce oil.

The harder challenge has always been turning the wealth beneath the ground into a better life above it.
