Prince Andrew has formally relinquished the use of his royal titles, including the Duke of York, after consultations with His Majesty King Charles and members of the royal family. The decision came amid continued public and legal scrutiny over the prince’s past associations and allegations that have overshadowed the work of the monarchy.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew said, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” The change took effect immediately, confirming the seriousness of the situation.
The relinquishment includes stepping back from the use of all honours and titles conferred upon him. However, he will retain the title “prince” as the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This significant move means he will no longer be known as the Duke of York and will cease attendance at official royal events, including the family’s traditional Christmas celebrations.
The decision followed exhaustive discussions involving key royal family members, including William, Prince of Wales. The prince’s ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, will now be known simply as Sarah Ferguson. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles and remain unimpacted by this development.
Prince Andrew’s troubles began to gain widespread public attention following an explosive 2015 civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre accused Jeffrey Epstein of trafficking her and forcing her into sexual encounters with his associates as a minor, including Prince Andrew. She alleges that these encounters took place at Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands, his Manhattan residence, and in London at the home of Ghislaine Maxwell.
The prince has consistently and vigorously denied the allegations. Despite this denial, the lawsuit led to a severe public backlash. In 2019, after a poorly received BBC interview addressing the accusations, Prince Andrew stepped back from public duties. Subsequently, he was stripped of his honorary military posts and roles on multiple charitable organizations.
In 2022, Prince Andrew and Giuffre reached an undisclosed out-of-court settlement, bringing some resolution to the decade-long legal battle. Nonetheless, the prince’s reputation remained damaged, with ongoing repercussions for his position within the royal family.
Further complicating his public image are revelations about Prince Andrew’s ties to Yang Tengbo, an alleged Chinese spy. Court documents from a December 2024 tribunal exposed the close business relationship between Andrew and Yang, who was barred from the UK after an investigation. Yang allegedly acted as Andrew’s representative in business dealings with Chinese investors. Throughout the government inquiry, Yang has denied any wrongdoing.
Despite these setbacks, Prince Andrew will continue to live at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where he holds a private tenancy agreement. Buckingham Palace sources emphasize this withdrawal from official royal life marks a significant shift but that he will maintain his private life separate from royal duties.
This development ends an era marked by scandal and controversy for Prince Andrew, who now steps back to avoid further distracting the monarchy from its mission.
