OWERRI – In a poignant conclusion to a tragedy that gripped the nation four years ago, the Nigerian Army has successfully recovered the remains of two personnel murdered by suspected IPOB/ESN militants while traveling for their wedding in 2022.
The recovery marks the end of a long, agonizing search for Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew. The couple was abducted and brutally executed along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of Imo State in late April 2022, a crime that drew widespread condemnation for its sheer inhumanity.
A Journey Interrupted
The late MWO Audu, a retired veteran, and LCpl Mathew, who was serving in Sokoto at the time, were en route to Gloria’s ancestral home for their traditional marriage rites. What was intended to be a cross-cultural celebration of unity between their families in Makurdi and Imo ended in a violent ambush.
For years, the location of their final resting place remained a mystery, even as the military vowed that the sacrifice of “their own” would not go unavenged or unhonored.
The Recovery Operation
Acting on fresh intelligence, troops of the 82 Division, in coordination with sister security agencies, launched a specialized clearance operation on April 24, 2026.
The mission was far from routine. As security forces approached the suspected site in the Orsu area, they were met with fierce resistance. Armed IPOB elements launched a series of ambushes and regrouped assaults in a desperate bid to protect the site. However, the troops successfully repelled the attacks, forcing the insurgents to flee into the hinterlands.

Upon securing the perimeter, a meticulous search led to the discovery of shallow graves. Military forensic experts supervised the excavation, recovering the remains believed to be those of the fallen couple.
Honors and Forensic Verification
Military sources have confirmed that the remains have been moved for comprehensive forensic examination and DNA profiling. This process is essential to provide the families with absolute certainty before the commencement of formal burial rites.
A senior official within the 82 Division stated:
”The Nigerian Army remains a family that never forgets its members. Now that they have been found, we are committed to ensuring MWO Linus and LCpl Gloria receive a befitting burial with full military honors. It is the least we can do for those who served and sacrificed.”
Context of Conflict
The 2022 killing of the couple remains one of the darkest chapters in the ongoing security challenges in the Southeast. The region has faced significant socio-economic strain due to the activities of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), characterized by attacks on security infrastructure and civilians alike.

While this recovery brings a sense of “morbid closure” to the families, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its stance on intensifying intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore lasting peace to the region.
