A High Court sitting in Lokoja has ordered Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to pay N1 billion in damages to former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, over a defamation suit.
In a judgment delivered on April 23, Justice A. S. Ibrahim ruled in favour of the claimant, holding that statements made by the senator during a November 4, 2022 appearance on Arise TV’s The Morning Show were defamatory.
The court found that the remarks, which allegedly described Bello as a “murderer” and “terror,” were not justified and damaged his reputation.
Consequently, the court awarded N1 billion in damages and issued a perpetual injunction restraining Akpoti-Uduaghan and her associates from making further defamatory statements against Bello in the media.
The suit, filed by Bello, challenged the senator’s claims, while her legal team had earlier contested the court’s jurisdiction—an argument that was dismissed both at the High Court and on appeal.
