The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled two major illegal alcohol production syndicates in Lagos, seizing counterfeit and adulterated beverages with an estimated street value of ₦350 million.
The coordinated crackdown, fueled by strategic intelligence, targeted clandestine operations within the Trade Fair Complex (Zamfara Plaza) and high-traffic areas of Lagos Island. Enforcement teams recovered over 1,800 cartons of fake alcoholic drinks intended for public consumption.
At the Trade Fair site, NAFDAC officials uncovered a sophisticated, albeit unhygienic, “factory” setup. The raid revealed plastic mixing tanks, improvised filtration systems, and a massive cache of branded bottles, corks, and packaging materials designed to mimic premium spirits.
On Lagos Island, the agency apprehended a key suspect believed to be central to the retail distribution network of these toxic substances. All recovered items have been evacuated to NAFDAC facilities for destruction and further investigation.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, warned that these adulterated products are often laced with lethal chemicals. Consuming such beverages can lead to permanent organ damage, blindness, or immediate death.
The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, particularly in open markets, and to report any suspicious manufacturing activities to the nearest regulatory office.
