WORKINGTON – Organizers of an upcoming wildlife event in Cumbria have been forced to issue a polite, albeit awkward, reminder to prospective attendees: the festival is for “naturalists,” not “naturists.”
The Cumbria Nature Festival, scheduled to take place from May 8–10, 2026, in Workington, found itself at the center of a social media whirlwind this week. A “common misunderstanding” led several visitors to believe the event was a clothing-optional retreat rather than a weekend dedicated to red squirrels and conservation.
A ‘Brief’ Misunderstanding
The confusion prompted the festival’s organizing committee to release an official statement on Facebook, offering a “clarification” for anyone who may have booked under a false—and likely drafty—impression.
”After a recent enquiry we need to clarify—Cumbria Nature Festival is primarily aimed at NATURALISTS… not NATURISTS,” the post read. “Please do dress appropriately.”
Sam Griffin, a member of the organizing committee, told reporters that while the group aims to be inclusive, they felt it was necessary to draw a line before the gates opened. “People hear ‘naturalist’ and they interpret it as something else,” Griffin explained. “We’re just wildlife enthusiasts rather than anything else.”
The Silver Lining
Despite the potential for embarrassment, the mix-up has proven to be a marketing masterstroke. The post has gone viral, resulting in a surge of new followers and a spike in ticket sales.
Griffin confirmed that while the festival offered full refunds to anyone who had “booked in error,” no one has actually taken them up on the offer. It seems those looking for a “naked” weekend have decided to stay for the birds instead.
What to Expect (With Your Clothes On)
The three-day event aims to highlight the ecological diversity of the region, which organizers say is often overshadowed by the neighboring Lake District.
