ABUJA — In a major push to dismantle borderless financial malfeasance, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have formalized a strategic partnership.
The two law enforcement agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, aiming to choke off sophisticated cyber-enabled syndicates and transnational financial crimes.
A Unified Front Against Borderless Syndicates
Speaking at the signing ceremony, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede emphasized that modern economic crimes thrive on globalization, making multi-jurisdictional cooperation non-negotiable.

“What affects Nigeria inevitably affects Australia. That is why countries have to come together because criminals always work together,” Olukoyede stated, noting that law enforcement networks must match the agility of organized criminal cartels.
The framework establishes structured protocols for intelligence sharing, technical exchange, and mutual operational support, subject to the domestic laws of both nations.

Deepening Bilateral Ties
The Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leilani Bin-Juda, lauded Nigeria’s regional leadership in combating cyber threats, pointing out that African nations frequently look to Abuja for direction in cybersecurity frameworks.
Echoing her sentiments, AFP Assistant Commissioner Sandra Booth traced the cooperative history between the two bodies back to 2004. She noted that the decades-long synergy has already yielded critical breakthroughs in sensitive investigations, business email compromise (BEC) schemes, and systemic financial scams.
Commendation for Operatives
The event also spotlighted tactical excellence, with the AFP honoring four standout EFCC operatives for exceptional investigative brilliance during a complex, long-term joint case.
The recognized officers are:
Abba Sambo Usman (Assistant Commander of the EFCC II)
Olufemi Olukinni (Assistant Commander of the EFCC II)
Omewa Pius Nnaemeka (Assistant Commander of the EFCC II)
Owolabi Jude Oyarekhua (Inspector of the EFCC I)
The latest pact marks another milestone in Nigeria’s aggressive diplomatic and law enforcement outreach to secure international financial corridors and protect global digital infrastructure.
